When to See an Oral Surgeon

Knowing when to see an oral surgeon is crucial for addressing complex dental issues effectively. Here are some common situations where consulting an oral surgeon is recommended:

  • An oral surgeon can perform safe and effective extractions if your wisdom teeth are impacted or causing pain.
  • Teeth that have not erupted properly can lead to misalignment and discomfort; removal by an oral surgeon can prevent further complications.
  • Severe tooth infections that cannot be treated with root canal therapy may require extraction to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Oral surgeons are skilled in treating infections that affect the face and jaw, ensuring comprehensive care.
  • Dental implants placed by an oral surgeon offer a permanent and natural-looking solution for missing teeth.
  • Bone grafting enhances bone structure to support dental implants, especially when bone loss has occurred.
  • Oral surgeons can manage temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD), relieving pain and improving jaw function.
  • Sedation options provided by oral surgeons ensure comfort during various dental procedures.
  • Surgical correction of congenital facial deformities such as cleft lip and palate improves function and appearance.
  • Root-end surgery (apicoectomy) treats persistent infections at the tip of a tooth’s root.
  • Diagnosing and surgically treating oral cancers, tumors, cysts and performing biopsies.

    2024

I was looking for an oral surgeon for my 6 year old son, very hard to find for a child so young. Melissa at the front desk was so helpful when I called to inquire. She is wonderful, put me at ease more than a once.  Melissa is what you want at the front desk when you go to a health care provider. She is friendly, knowledgeable, patient, welcoming, a truly kind person.

Dr Yang is so sweet, so gentle, and really focused on speaking to my son to make him comfortable. Very impressed! The consultation was great very informative, explained everything to my son. We were confident we were in the right place to have the procedure done.

The day of the procedure, it couldn’t have gone smoother. Melissa, wonderful as usual. Dr Yang and his assistant were calm, it was a relaxed atmosphere for a nervous 6 year old and his parents. We were so pleased and grateful for the encounter we experienced. Thank you Melissa, Dr Yang and your kind assistant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an oral surgeon and a prosthodontist?

An oral surgeon specializes in surgical procedures involving the mouth, teeth, jaws, and face, such as extractions, implants, and corrective jaw surgery. A prosthodontist, on the other hand, specializes in restoring and replacing teeth using prosthetics like crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants. While both work to improve oral health, their training and focus areas differ significantly.

How much does oral surgery typically cost?

The cost of oral surgery can vary widely depending on the procedure. Simple extractions might cost between $75 and $200 per tooth, while more complex surgeries like wisdom tooth removal or dental implants can range from $225 to $2,500 per tooth. Factors influencing the cost include the complexity of the surgery, the type of anesthesia used, and the location of the dental clinic.

Does Gentle Dental provide oral surgery services?

Yes, Gentle Dental provides a comprehensive range of oral surgery services. Our experienced oral surgeons are equipped with advanced technology to perform procedures such as extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, and corrective jaw surgery, ensuring you receive the highest quality care.

What should you avoid doing after oral surgery?

After oral surgery, you should avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, and consuming hot or spicy foods, as these can disrupt the healing process. It is also advisable to avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours to prevent increased bleeding and swelling. Follow your oral surgeon's specific aftercare instructions for the best recovery.

What follow-up care is required after a tooth extraction?

Follow-up care after a tooth extraction typically includes keeping the extraction site clean, avoiding vigorous rinsing or spitting, and taking prescribed medications as directed. You should also follow a soft-food diet for a few days and avoid smoking. Your dentist may schedule a follow-up visit to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.
